Transition from Kaltura to Panopto
We are excited to announce that we will be transitioning from Kaltura to Panopto, a new platform for managing and sharing video content, especially within your Canvas courses.
Panopto offers several benefits, including:
- Enhanced Functionality: Panopto provides a more user-friendly interface and a wider range of features, making it easier to create, edit, and share videos.
- Improved Accessibility: Panopto offers greater accessibility features, including automatic captioning and transcripts, which will benefit everyone using our video platform.
- Seamless Integration: Panopto integrates seamlessly with Canvas, making it easy to incorporate videos into your courses.
We will begin the transition to Panopto mid-May. We understand that switching to a new platform may require some adjustments, so to help ensure a smooth transition, we will be providing a variety of resources for students and employees at odu.edu/panopto.
In the meantime, you can learn more about Panopto by visiting the .
Videos in Canvas Courses
- We are actively working with Panopto to migrate all Kaltura content that has been uploaded or accessed since December 1, 2022. We will automatically update links to these videos within your Canvas courses by July 11.
- You will not be able to upload new course content to Kaltura after June 30, 2025.
- Videos began migrating on April 10, 2025. If you’ve made any edits or changes to videos since April 10, updated videos will be migrated and relinked, but you might see duplicates in your library.
- Continue to find your course video content in the “My Media” and "Media Gallery" sections of Canvas, just as before. "My Media" will display content from Panopto.
Videos from Zoom and other non-course sources
- Meetings recorded between December 1, 2022, and June 30, 2025, will be migrated and available to access in Panopto after May 12. Earlier recordings will be securely archived and can be retrieved upon request, or you can manually download content from Kaltura and upload to Panopto. Contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
- Zoom recordings since April 10, 2025, are currently being stored in Kaltura AND Panopto. All recordings since April 10, can be found in either place until June 30. (Meetings recorded during this window may end up being duplicated in Panopto after migration).
- Links to Kaltura content from the Ƶ website or from an Ƶ WordPress site will be automatically redirected to the migrated Panopto content.
Access videos from Canvas or Panopto
You can start creating and accessing content in Panopto beginning May 8.
Canvas
- Panopto tools and content are now located in the “My Media” and “My Gallery” tabs in Canvas. The Kaltura tools have been renamed “My Media – old” and “Media Gallery – old” and will eventually go away.
